Proposed R-Code Reforms by the WA State Government

The Western Australian State Government has announced a range of proposed changes to the Residential Design Codes (R-Codes) to increase housing supply and simplify the planning system. Key proposals include:

  • Reducing average lot size requirements for some residential developments, potentially enabling additional subdivision and development opportunities on lots from 700m².
  • Shortening assessment timeframes for certain housing applications.
  • Expanding exemptions for simple residential projects, such as some single houses, renovations, patios and carports.
  • Removing minimum parking requirements for apartments and ancillary dwellings (granny flats).
  • Updating higher-density development controls and simplifying the R-Codes.

The Shire of Denmark supports the intent of these proposed reforms. However, the details have not yet been released. The consultation is still to take place, and any changes are not expected to come into effect until mid-2027.

This means that current planning requirements in the Shire of Denmark remain unchanged.
