Ocean Beach Redevelopment Reaches Next Stages

As we transition through the winter months, Ocean Beach continues its exciting transformation, with the Shire of Denmark commencing the next stages of the redevelopment works following our award of the tender for the construction of the timber boardwalk and access steps to local contractor, Purpose Built Constructions.

An integral piece of infrastructure, the timber boardwalk will be positioned atop the new sea wall, allowing our community to walk along the frontage or rest on the balustrading overlooking our beautiful Ocean beach.

Work on the public spaces are commencing this month, which include the construction of limestone retaining walls, the creation of grass-banked seating areas, and the provision of access stairs to the lower level and new seating.

The redevelopment, featuring the expansion of public spaces and amenities, including new toilets, a kiosk, and the refurbishment of the Surf Club building, in addition to the new sea wall, will provide the community with an overall enhancement of the precinct with improved accessibility provided through new stairs from the recently refurbished Ocean Beach lookout, allowing our community to continue enjoying the beach.

This exciting project is proudly funded by the Shire of Denmark and the Denmark Surf Life Saving Club as well as the Department of Transport, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest.

Starting in October of 2023, this ambitious project broke ground, promising a vibrant new look for one of Denmark's most beloved destinations and following the closure of Ocean Beach and the boat launch site in February 2024, construction commenced on the new storage area for the Denmark Surf Club, as well as demolition of the current toilet block, and refurbishment of the existing surf club building, all under Smith Constructions WA.

Shire of Denmark President Kingsley Gibson said that, of all the projects underway in the Shire, there is significant anticipation for the completion of the Ocean Beach redevelopment and what it will deliver to the community.

“I think it’s fair to say that our community is very excited for the reopening of Ocean Beach and to be able to enjoy everything this redevelopment has promised,” said Cr Gibson.

The Shire of Denmark continues working diligently with contractors to minimise inconvenience to our community.

“We’re very grateful for the understanding of community members so far in this major project, which has ensured a smooth and efficient construction process thus far,” said Cr Gibson.

“We look forward to seeing Ocean Beach transformed into a vibrant and welcoming space for our community and visitors to enjoy for generations to come!”
