Facility Upgrades to Prawn Rock Channel Recreational Area

The Shire of Denmark is pleased to announce State Government funding has been secured to allow works to commence on the construction of a new public toilet block at Prawn Rock Channel.

The increasingly popular recreational precinct has faced growing user pressures in recent years, with a warmly received letter from the Minister for Regional Development in December 2022 announcing $350,000 would be made available for the construction project.

Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer David Schober said the news was very welcome.

“We’re getting straight to work on this project thanks to this redirected State Government funding,” Mr Schober said.

“The new toilet block will be situated on the northern side of the middle car park down at Prawn Rock Channel, and our goal is to have it fully completed and operational by June 30.”

The new toilet block will mirror the accessible toilet block installed at Lights Beach in 2021.

The project comes as part of a suite of improvement projects in the area, including the recent completion of erosion protection works.

“In recent weeks, we completed some remediation work to storm erosion-impacted sections of Prawn Rock Channel, with the aim to ensure on-going quality of the user experience at this popular recreational site is maintained,” Mr Schober said.

“This week, we’re also commencing our investigations for a much-needed path down to the beach from the Ocean Beach lookout.”

The properly constructed path, also due for completion by June 30, will improve access to Ocean Beach for community members, their canine friends and visitors year-round, while reducing disturbance of the fragile coastal dune vegetation.

“Following recent funding disappointments, we’re really pleased to be able to make these announcements and get some work done to improve the amenities and access in this beautiful corner of our community,” Mr Schober said.

“The erosion protection works, new toilet block and new beach accessway will not only have a positive impact on the user experience for our community members and visitors, but we hope they will also reduce some of the environmental impacts which have resulted from the increasing user demands at the site.”
