Denmark Welcomes First Fast EV Charging Facility

The Shire of Denmark has taken a significant step toward supporting sustainable transport, delivering its first fast electric vehicle (EV) charging facility.

The 150 kW DC fast charger is now operational at the Denmark Community Resource Centre carpark on North Street, providing a major boost to local EV infrastructure, filling a gap in the fast-charger network between Albany and Walpole and comes after the installation of a dual 22 kW AC charger at Berridge Park in early 2023.

This new project has been co-funded by the Government of Western Australia through Energy Policy WA, alongside contributions from the Denmark Sustainability Fund, with the Schneider Electric EVlink Pro 150 kW dual-port charger offering high-speed charging capability for residents and visitors alike.

The charger provides flexible and user-friendly access as drivers can utilise the GoCharge mobile app or take advantage of a convenient tap-and-go credit card option, allowing charging without the need to download an app.

Shire President Aaron Wiggins said the installation is a good step forward.

“Having a fast charger within town really is an essential piece of infrastructure these days,” Cr Wiggins said.

“This will allow reassurance and security for both day trips and visitors to our town who own electric vehicles, enabling them to stay a bit longer, see a bit more without any range stress or time restrictions imposed by slow charging.”

“It also will provide flexibility and options for the many local EV owners.”

Having used many EV charging locations around the State, Cr Wiggins said he believes the placement and accessibility of the site are user-friendly.

“It’s located in town so normal activities can be done while charging, with a drive-through layout so it does not become a car park or take away from other car parking,” Cr Wiggins said.

The North Road carpark has been altered to one-way traffic flow as part of the upgrades, with entry via the roundabout at North Road and Strickland Street and exit via the charger lanes onto North Road.

As part of the installation process, civil works were also undertaken to future-proof the site as demand for public EV charging facilities grows into the future.

This project marks an important milestone in supporting sustainable transport and advancing Denmark’s journey toward a net-zero emissions future, while ensuring the town remains EV-friendly for both locals and visitors.
