Another successful Children’s Book Week was celebrated at the Denmark Public Library last month, with colourful costumes and school classroom visits, capped off by a special visit from popular author Dianne Wolfer.
Dianne’s visit was the highlight of the week, which is a cherished annual event locally, fostering a love of reading and storytelling among Denmark’s kids.
Students from Denmark Primary School heard about the author’s writing journey and the inspiration for many of her books, talking about her wide range of genres, characters, and themes and giving some simple tricks and tips for putting ideas on a page.
Senior Librarian Robyn Fairclough said the Denmark Public Library staff make the most fun out of Book Week each year by dressing up as their favourite literary characters each day of the week, and receiving visits from local classrooms at the Library.
“We also visit kindergartens so we can gift each child with a Better Beginnings box, filled with resources to encourage and spark an interest in reading,” Ms Fairclough said.
“This year’s Children’s Book Week theme, Symphony of Stories, reminds us that books can transport us to new and fantastic places, and helps children to explore diverse characters and settings in books.”
Ms Fairclough said Children’s Book Week always demonstrates the proven benefits of reading for pleasure for children and young people.
“Every book helps build literacy skills, and allowing children to choose their own books gives them a sense of ownership and makes reading even more enjoyable, so we encourage families to visit the library and let your child choose their books."
“If you’re not sure where to start, or your child experiences reading challenges, please speak to our Library staff. We can help with selecting books which include graphic novels and magazines, eResources for children, dyslexia-friendly reads and more. Books are more than just stories on a page; they are gateways to imagination and knowledge.”
Children's Book Week 2026 is supported by The Government of Western Australia through The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport and The WA Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia.
