Eagle-eyed recyclers in Denmark will have noticed the arrival of Containers for Change baskets on public bins around the township of Denmark in recent weeks.
The new installations mean that members of the public can perform a double good deed by recycling their eligible container which may then be collected by an individual or community group who can claim the 10c refund for themselves by depositing the container at the Denmark Waste Management and Refuse Facility Containers for Change refund point.
Any containers that are placed in the Containers for Change baskets are ‘fair game’ for collection by anyone who wishes to collect them for the 10c refund, providing opportunities for local community groups to raise funds for their activities, or even for individuals to pocket a bit of cash, all as part of the popular incentive program to reduce waste from entering landfill.
Containers for Change has been a popular program in Denmark since it was launched State-wide in 2020, with 4.6 million containers diverted from landfill in Denmark since June 2023, resulting in more than $462,000 refunded back into the local community.
Denmark Shire President Aaron Wiggins said the Shire hopes to see community groups make the most of this new fund-raising opportunity.
“Utilising Containers for Change is a great way for us to keep more of the money we spend every week in town,” Cr Wiggins said.
“I urge everyone to go to the effort of putting their eligible containers in one of the many locations available.”
“I would like to thank our dedicated group of locals who have championed this program and are determined that we as a community make the most of it.”
In total, there are 23 new Containers for Change baskets installed on bins around Strickland Street, South Coast Highway, Hollings Road, Denmark Recreation Centre, Ocean Beach and other busy locations around town.
Containers can be deposited at the new Drop and Go station recently installed at the Denmark Community Resource Centre which can distribute funds directly to a nominated community group or personal account at any time. The Containers for Change refund point is also open at the Denmark Waste Management and Refuse Facility on Wednesdays and Saturdays between noon and 4pm.
