Proposed Road Name - Gillingham (Closed)


Council are seeking comments on a proposed future road name, GILLINGHAM, which could be allocated to a future road reserve within the Shire of Denmark.

Background

Walter John and Christina Lovell Gillingham moved to Denmark in 1921 where Walter worked as a butcher.  Walter was involved with the local Agricultural Shows and responsible for organising horse events.  He was instrumental in starting the St John’s Ambulance service in Denmark, served 31 years as a volunteer and taught first aid for many years at the Denmark Agricultural College.  Christina was an active member of The Red Cross and instrumental in founding the Denmark Infant Health Clinic.  Walter and Christina raised 5 children in Denmark and were active fundraisers for the war effort. After the war, Christina and her daughter opened a tea room on Strickland Street.
