Shire Supports Community Environmental Education

A variety of community-oriented environmental education programs will be receiving financial and in-kind support from the Shire of Denmark this year with funding made available through the Shire’s sustainability budget.

A call for expressions of interest went out to relevant local not-for-profit and non-governmental-organisations last month, with the Shire’s Sustainability Officer pleased to receive a number of submissions from a range of community environmental groups.

Successful proposals which met the criteria were submitted by organisations including Green Skills, Denmark Environment Centre, Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee and South Coast Bush Care Services (formerly Denmark Weed Action Group) with education programs and events covering topics like gardening, weed recognition, best-practice owl-friendly pest control and culture sharing with local Elders.

Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer David Schober said the Shire has a history of supporting public education programs for sustainability in the community.

“We have such a depth of local expertise here which is a valuable resource to tap into,” Mr Schober said.
“By offering our support to these up-coming educational activities we hope even more members of our community will be able to access the incredible bank of knowledge which exists within our local environmental groups.”
“We’re also pleased to say this support ticks another box as part of the community leadership Council committed to when they endorsed our Sustainability Strategy.”

In addition to leadership commitments made, key objectives included the promotion of sustainable best practice within the broader community and supporting the provision of education to the broader community on protection of the natural environment.

“This is another positive step forward for the long-term sustainable future of our community and Shire,” Mr Schober said.
