Beth Franz has been awarded the title of Honorary Freeman for her exceptional service to the Denmark community. The prestigious title was announced at a jammed packed senior’s luncheon held on Friday 13 November.

Councillors Mark Allen and Roger Seeney celebrated Beth’s nomination. Cr Seeney highlighted many of Beth’s achievements including her long-standing service to the Scouts and her commitment to the community which led to her being awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2001.
Cr Allen noted that to be nominated as the Shire’s Honorary Freeman is a rare occurrence. There have only been two previous Freemans in Denmark, Percy Berridge, November 1973 and Mrs Eileen Lunan, February 2006.

Mrs Franz was elated by the nomination and said it was a great honour which she was not expecting. The Shire President Ceinwen Gearon, presented Mrs Franz with an Honorary Freeman lapel pin, award and certificate.

Other highlights of the Senior’s Luncheon event included great entertainment by James Flynn and David Rastrick. Attendees enjoyed an indoor picnic-style lunch, danced and made the most of this social opportunity. Feedback was very positive with attendees stating that the music and the chance to interact with others were the most enjoyable parts of the function.

The Seniors Luncheon is an annual event offered as part of a week-long Seniors Week program. Other activities included a fabulous Ancestry Workshop and Seed library launch at the Denmark Library. The Recreation Centre offered fitness sessions, a First Aid Course and very popular free table tennis and badminton sessions. A free lunchtime showing of the movie ‘The Leunig Fragments’ was also popular.

Denmark CRC hosted an exhibition in partnership with the Historical Society which includes displays of rare artifacts. The exhibition continues until Saturday 21 November.

Shire Deputy Councillor Allen said Seniors week provides an opportunity to thank our Denmark seniors for their ongoing contributions.
“This year particularly it provided an opportunity for our seniors to have fun, get out and about and participate in our community.”

“We are very proud to show our commitment to enriching the lives of our seniors and to acknowledge them for their ongoing contributions. Our local seniors’ contributions have made Denmark the amazing town we now all get to enjoy,” he said.
