The Denmark Shire Council last week made a public commitment to acknowledge and accept the invitation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
At the October Ordinary Council Meeting, Councillors unanimously resolved to acknowledge the Uluru Statement as an address to the Australian people, inviting the nation to create a better future.
Denmark Shire President Ceinwen Gearon lead the discussion on the item after bringing it forward in the agenda to the top of the meeting.
“I feel deeply passionate about the significance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and I’m delighted we’re considering an Officer Recommendation such as this,” Cr Gearon said.
“The Statement is a beautiful invitation to all Australians, inviting us all to walk and work together to a better future.”
“As an organisation, we are just starting down our own path of building respectful relationships and reconciliation, and I feel this resolution of Council is a public declaration of our commitment to playing our role in community development, education, inclusion and cohesiveness.”
“In our discussions with local Elders and Indigenous stakeholders so far, we’re hearing that Indigenous people feel that our community is a welcoming and culturally-safe space, but I hope this is just a start and that we can continue to build our community’s capacity to be an ally.”
Plain text copies of the Statement are on display at the Shire Administration Building foyer, Denmark Public Library and Denmark Recreation Centre, along with FAQ sheets and other resources.
The Shire will also commence a community engagement program regarding the Statement and its intent.
“This is a really exciting time in Australia’s history,” Cr Gearon said, “and I’m proud to be part of this organisation and community as we do our bit to stand alongside the First Nations people who have cared for this land long, long, long before the Shire of Denmark was in existence.”
