Roadworks Update: Lights Road Upgrade Nears Completion

A major road upgrade project is nearing completion in Denmark with the final sealing of Lights Road underway this week.

It’s an exciting milestone for the project because, once the last of the sealing is completed, only cosmetic works remain before the roadworks project can be closed off, with the last of drainage works, curbing, line-marking and signs to be finalised in the coming weeks.

Lights Road is an important and increasingly popular traffic link between the Ocean Beach and Lights Beach area to South Coast Highway, and has been undergoing roadworks since November last year.

Funded by the State Government through Main Roads and delivered by local contractors, the project faced some weather delays, but is set to delivered within budget and with minimal environmental impact in a win for our community.

Denmark Shire President Ceinwen Gearon had a chance to inspect the works today and said she was proud to see this project being delivered ahead of winter.

“This has been a long-awaited project and I’m glad our community will soon be able to enjoy travelling along this newly bituminised road,” Dr Gearon said.

“I’m sure all will agree the Shire and our local contractor worked effectively together to build this upgrade in a sympathetic manner that preserves the feel of the road which we all loved when it was gravel, with minimal impact to the vegetation and better road safety outcomes.”

With the road now sealed, maintenance costs of the road associated with regular grading will be reduced, and the trees along the sides of the road will no longer suffer the impacts of grading, therefore improving the health and longevity of the beautiful landscape that Lights Road traverses.

Road closures during business hours on weekdays will continue until the final minor works are completed by the end of June.
