New Council gets community's vote of confidence

A mix of the familiar and the new make up the latest Shire of Denmark Council, with Saturday night’s election results seeing four Councillors re-elected alongside two fresh faces.

4679 valid votes were cast in the 2019 Local Government Elections which attracted 14 nominees vying for the six vacant Councillor positions.

Janine Phillips returns as Councillor for Kent/Nornalup ward with 374 votes (59.94%) against only rival Ray Benson with 250 votes (40.06%), while newcomer Steve Jones (587 votes, 22.80%) will represent the Scotsdale Shadforth ward alongside the re-elected Kingsley Gibson (475 votes, 18.45%) and Jan Lewis (453 votes, 17.59%).

Two positions were vacant in the Town ward which attracted six nominees. Shire President Ceinwen Gearon was returned as Councillor for a second term with 358 votes (24.19%) and newly-elected Geoff Bowley received 349 votes (23.58%).

At a special Council meeting on Tuesday night, the new Council voted Ceinwen Gearon to continue the role of Shire President and Councillor Mark Allen was voted in as Deputy Shire President.

Cr Gearon said the new Council will continue looking forward and building on the achievements of the past Council.

“It’s great to see all of the Councillors up for re-election returned for another term alongside the newly elected Councillors, this shows a high level of community confidence in Council and its work over the past few years.

“I look forward to being a part of this new Council, to looking to the future and working cohesively to deliver the community’s expectations.

“The work that the administration and previous Council have done to implement a fully compliant and robust Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework and strategic direction means that the new Council is set up in the best possible way to fulfil those expectations,” she said.
