Make lasting connections this Neighbour Day

The Shire of Denmark is offering up ten $100 IGA vouchers to community members who host a Neighbour Day celebration on 29th March.

Neighbour Day – an initiative of Relationships Australia is an annual celebration of community that encourages people to connect with those who live nearby.  It promotes neighbours to get to know each other to reduce isolation and foster inclusion.

The theme for Neighbour Day 2020 is ‘Social Connection’. This year, the Shire is encouraging residents to build strong social connections with the people around them, because it can truly make a difference to the lives of those who may be struggling with isolation or loneliness.

Neighbours are encouraged to host a party, hold a neighbourhood morning tea, BBQ, long table lunch, picnic in the park or other activity.

Applications will be considered in order of receipt. The first ten applications to meet all the criteria will be awarded the incentive.

To qualify for the incentive, entrants must live in the Shire of Denmark, register their free event at neighbourday.org and hold their event on Sunday 29 March 2020. Photos and attendee numbers must also be provided post event.

Participants who host their celebration at a local community hall are eligible to apply for a $200 voucher to cover the cost of food, amusements or entertainment.

Events hosted in a park or public space may require event approval through the Shire and be in line with the Shire’s sustainable events policy. Hosts are encouraged to consider accessibility and making their event family and child friendly.

People experience loneliness across the age and social spectrum, including young people, people living with their families, and even people surrounded by others in the workplace.

If hosting an event is not possible, residents can still participate by making a pledge to introduce themselves to a new neighbour, drop off a kind note to neighbours with a young family, or invite them over for a catch-up.

Applications close Thursday 19 March with the successful applicants announced on Friday 20 March.
