The Shire of Denmark is calling on the community to help review our Local Heritage Survey, which seeks to recognise places of cultural heritage significance that are valued by the community and form part of the unique character of our Shire.
Supported by Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage through the Local Government Heritage Consultancy Grants Program, this initiative invites residents to contribute information on existing heritage places or nominate new places they believe hold cultural and historical significance both now and into the future—whether rooted in ancient Noongar traditions, European settlement, or modern-day community life.
Currently, the Shire’s Survey includes 124 places identified as having cultural heritage significance and we’re seeking your input to update and potentially expand this list.
Whether it’s a cherished local landmark, a site of community gatherings, or a place tied to personal or collective memory, your nomination can help preserve Denmark’s identity for future generations.
Shire of Denmark President, Kingsley Gibson says this is a chance for everyone in our community to join in and write our heritage story together.
“Our history is more than old buildings—it’s the story of who we are, where we’ve come from, and what makes our Shire unique”, Cr Gibson said.
“By participating, our community is helping to ensure that Denmark’s rich and diverse heritage is recognised and respected.”
Anyone interested in taking part can visit the Local Heritage Survey page on the Shire’s Your Denmark site at www.yourdenmark.wa.gov.au/local-heritage-survey
Here, you can share locations you believe are important to our heritage, provide new information or insights about places already on the list, and learn how heritage values are assessed and how your input contributes to planning and preservation.
Additionally, a small historical photography exhibition, provided courtesy of the Denmark Historical Society, will be on display at the Shire Administration Building, offering more information for anyone interested in our history.
“Heritage is a living story—today’s everyday places are tomorrow’s history, and I look forward to seeing the contributions our community can make to this story”
The survey is open now and will remain open until 5pm Friday, 25th July, after which all nominations will be reviewed by the Shire’s Heritage Consultant to help prepare our new Local Heritage Survey.
