An equal access playground with a wheelchair ramp, safety stairs and room for carers to move around the equipment was installed at Berridge Park last week, an initiative by the Shire of Denmark Parks and Gardens team to ensure accessibility for children of all abilities.

The Parks and Gardens team, as part of their playground and play equipment update program, identified the opportunity to install the playground and researched options that all children could enjoy.

“The Shire’s play equipment is aging, and upon dismantling this particularly old playground we wanted to replace it with something that could be enjoyed by more of the community. In looking through the options we came across equal access equipment. This equipment drew my attention as something that was missing and needed in our community. Hopefully the new equipment will be able to be enjoyed by children that were unable to take part previously,” Supervisor Works and Gardens Mr Stephen Bondini said.

Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer Mr Bill Parker said the installation of the playground reflected the community’s desire for public spaces that are accessible and inclusive for all.

“There has been a genuine desire from the Council and Shire staff to improve access to services and community infrastructure. Our accessibility awareness has been driven by the great work of the Community Services Team and Disability Services Committee. Where possible, the Shire will continue to implement accessible options,” he said.

The Shire’s newly adopted Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2018-2023 identifies a number of objectives and strategies to overcome access and inclusion barriers in the shire and is available to view on the Shire of Denmark website and in alternative formats by request.
