Dog in public places - community notice

Published on Thursday, 24 October 2019 at 12:12:10 PM

Recent concerns have been raised regarding dogs not being walked on leads within the townsite areas and dogs being tethered in front of doorways to businesses. Shire Rangers would like to remind dog owners of the following.

CONTROL OF DOGS IN PUBLIC PLACES

A dog shall not be in a public place unless it is held by a person who is capable of controlling the dog; or is securely tethered for a temporary purpose by means of a chain, cord, leash or harness of sufficient strength and not exceeding the prescribed length.

(Dog Act 1976, Section 31)

TETHERING YOUR DOG TO A POST OR CHAIR WHILE SHOPPING

Dogs should be tethered away from entrances to shops and not to seating where someone may need to rest.  As much as you love your dog and your dog is well behaved there are members of the general public who fear dogs or who have allergies. Leads around chairs can also present a tripping hazard to the elderly community and others when taking a seat.
