Around 120 people celebrated Denmark’s volunteers and their contributions at the Shire of Denmark’s Thank a Volunteer Day function on December 5.

This year’s event at the Denmark Angling Club run by the Shire’s Community Development team included a presentation by renowned guest speaker, Bank of I.D.E.A.S (Initiatives for the Development of Enterprising Action and Strategies) founder and director Peter Kenyon.

Mr Kenyon spoke about the benefits of volunteering and the importance of inclusion.

The level of volunteering can indicate the cohesiveness of the community and how readily individuals are able to contribute to that community.

Denmark has a large population of volunteers, from the emergency services to sporting, community and arts groups. The last census in 2016 showed that 29.8% of Denmark residents were volunteering for an organisation or group compared to the 23.3% regional average.

Acting CEO Mr David Schober who attended the event spoke of the critical role volunteers play in the Denmark community.

“The Shire and community treasure its volunteers. Passionate and vibrant volunteers shape the fabric of the community by providing significant financial, well-being and social benefits. As a community we rely heavily on volunteerism to provide opportunities and services that otherwise may not exist,” he said.

Drinks were kindly supplied by Boston Brewing Co, Artisan Brewing and Rising Star Wines and light canapes were served up for guests to enjoy.
