The Denmark community celebrated its seniors and their contributions during Seniors Week 2019 with a program full of variety encouraging seniors to remain active, healthy and engaged.

The week kicked off with a two-day expo at the Denmark Community Resource Centre with stalls and information including what really happens at a ‘Death Café’, energy boosting exercises, nutrition and ageing advice and retirement. Capping off the expo was a group singalong to get endorphins flowing.

The Library ran a workshop on ancestry – where participants could research family histories on the library’s free system, poetry readings, a family recipe share-a-thon, and a Be-Connected workshop teaching seniors about e-resources and staying safe online.

The Dementia Friendly Community session presented by dementia specialist Di Van Clarke attracted around 30 participants who learnt about dementia, discussed ideas on how to make Denmark more dementia-friendly, and learnt how they can support family and friends living with dementia.

The Intergenerational Tabletop Games at the Recreation Centre saw 116 Denmark Primary students challenge 14 seniors to classic board games.

Acting manager community services Damian Schwarzbach said the tournament allows young people and seniors to interact in a fun setting.

“It is fantastic to see the students so excited to participate in the games and to really engage and connect with the seniors,” he said.

The fully booked Summer of 69 seniors luncheon wrapped up the week with the Denmark Senior High School Choir welcoming guests through song and Denmark Scouts providing a flawless table service with the help of skipper Beth Franz. Catering by Nicky Crosby received glowing compliments from attendees. Mike Travers and Christine Hill took out prizes for best 60s era costumes.

Keynote speaker clinical psychiatrist and clinical director for Great Southern Mental Health Dr Noel Collins delivered an informative presentation on ageing and adjustment, and the importance of staying socially connected as people age.

Shire deputy president Cr Mark Allen said Seniors Week provides an opportunity to thank Denmark seniors.

“We are very proud to show our commitment to enriching the lives of our seniors and to acknowledge them for their ongoing contributions to our community. Our local seniors’ contributions have made Denmark the amazing town we now all get to enjoy,” he said.
