Behind the scenes - Shire seedbank and nursery

Mark is our Revegetation Officer. He heads the Shire’s revegetation program. Mark has been with us since 1993, when he set up a seedbank and nursery to grow local species which he then plants to revegetate disturbed areas. The seedbank currently contains around 200 species.

“The revegetation program is a great success story of the Shire and community working together to achieve positive environmental outcomes. Year to year between 25,000-50,000 plants are planted within the Shire. I would estimate we have revegetated around 54 hectares spread over 44 different sites."

Mark's love is in localised planting - collecting a variety of seeds from an area and returning to revegetate that area with plants that will thrive and feel at home. The localised approach means plant material is genetically suited to the environment.

"We have witnessed areas become habitat again. We have seen areas that were bare wasteland, and after our program, it now looks as though it is a regular part of the bush."

"We are fortunate to have a strong partnership with the Denmark Agricultural College, as it means we can achieve positive outcomes on a much larger scale and expand the knowledge and skills of the students. The team is always looking for more volunteers to become involved in the program and give nature a helping hand."
