Local Government Elections & Enrolment

Local Government Councillors are elected by people who live and do business in the local Council area and / or own property within the local government and have registered to vote (Electors). Councillors play an important community leadership role, create policies and make strategic decisions about what happens locally

Enrolling to Vote

To vote in a local government election, there are two types of enrolment.  State Electoral Roll or the Shire’s Owners & Occupiers Roll.  Before the election, these rolls are amalgamated into one combined roll which is then used to conduct the election.  A person can only be on one roll, not both.

State Electoral Roll

You are automatically enrolled to vote in the Shire of Denmark local government elections if you are on the State Electoral Roll at an address in the Denmark local government area.

If you are not on the State Roll for your residential address in Denmark, you can update your details with the WA Electoral Commission online or by mail.

To check your enrolment, enrol for the first time or change your details please go to the WA Electoral Commission’s website.

Owners and Occupiers Roll

If you are enrolled on the State Electoral roll in respect of a residence outside the Denmark local government electorate, own or occupy rateable land within the Denmark local government electorate, you may be eligible to be enrolled on the Owners and Occupiers Roll.

The Local Government Act 1995 covers various ownership or occupation scenarios, including joint ownership or occupation, body corporates or leases.

To make an application you will need to complete an enrolment form and submit it to the Shire for assessment.

If you want to be on the roll for a particular election, you must give your claim form to the local government more than 57 days before the election date.

Submission

To submit your claim, you can:

  • EMAIL it to info@denmark.wa.gov.au
  • POST it to PO Box 183, Denmark WA 6333; or
  • DELIVER it to the Shire’s Administration Building, 953 South Coast Highway, Denmark
