Director Corporate and Community Services – Gina McPharlin

Shire of Denmark President Ceinwen Gearon is pleased to announce that Council last night offered Gina McPharlin a Contract of Employment for the position of Director Corporate and Community Services.

A representative selection panel, consisting of two nominated Council members, conducted and facilitated the recruitment and selection process.

Following a rigorous assessment process, the selection panel recommendation was presented to Council behind closed doors at this month’s Ordinary Council Meeting. Council voted unanimously to endorse the recommendation, deeming Ms McPharlin to be the most suitably experienced and qualified candidate.

Ms McPharlin comes to the director role after eight months as Acting Manager Corporate Services with a background in accounting and project management in the private business, not-for-profit and State Government sectors.

“Council is very pleased that Gina has been successfully appointed to the role of Director of Corporate and Community Services,” Cr Gearon said.

“The process to identify the best candidate was robust and guided by contemporary recruitment practice. It is particularly reassuring that an internal candidate proved to be best in a very strong field of exceptional local government and non-local government applicants. Gina will complete the executive team.”

Cr Gearon also wished to recognise Lee Sounness, who has held the Acting Director role since August 2020.

“I would like to thank Lee for his calm and very capable guardianship of the role for the last 11 months. We were lucky to have him in the role,” Cr Gearon said.

Ms McPharlin will start her new role on Tuesday 10 August 2021.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Director Assets and Sustainable Development – David King

Cr Gearon was also pleased to last night offer David King a five-year contract extension for his role as Director Assets and Sustainable Development which he has held since 2019.

Additionally, Council voted to name Mr King as the Shire’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

Cr Gearon offered her warm congratulations to Mr King on his appointment.

“During David’s time with the Shire, he has guided his team through a comprehensive program of capital works, the roads program and the maintenance program whilst continuously refreshing the Shire’s asset management plan and guiding the planning team through a comprehensive review of the Local Planning Strategy and the Town Planning Scheme,” Cr Gearon said.

“David contributes significantly to the executive team and in recent weeks he took on the role of Acting CEO during a period of a number of significant challenges. His new designation as Deputy CEO recognises the strong leadership and management skills David has demonstrated and looks to ensure high level governance of the Shire’s administration team.”
