Denmark’s youth kick-started their end of term celebrations over the weekend at 4Youth Fest 2019 – a two day festival of live music, skateboarding workshops, art and community as part of National Youth Week.
The festival, an initiative of the Shire’s Community Development team, attracted over 200 young people across the two events and focussed on inclusion, engagement, and making healthy connections.
A youth event planning team of around 18 students collaborated with Shire staff to create the event from conception through to set up and delivery.
“We have been so impressed with the energy and enthusiasm that the youth planning team brought to this project. They can feel proud in knowing they have helped create two wonderful events for their peers that supports creativity and skill development in an inclusive, respectful way,” Acting CEO Mr Cary Green said.
Local indie soul-rock musician Clay Western performed to over 150 teenagers at Friday night’s 4Youth Music Fest at the Civic Centre. Popular DJ Dan FX whose mix of new and old tracks and spectacular laser light show created an exciting party atmosphere.
Denmark Senior High School’s aspiring musicians put on stellar performances for their peers. Black Note, Underage, Y10 Pop Band and Poddy Shot stunned their audience under the direction of music teacher Ben Power. Youth MCs Luka Milbourne and Eloise Garland hosted the event with a cool and energetic confidence.
Saturday’s event at the Denmark Skate Park attracted around 50 young people who participated in fun and engaging skateboarding workshops and skills training for all levels. The workshops, run by Skateboarding WA, ended with a jam session competition where advanced skaters showed off their skills.
Henna, face painting and art workshops drew people of all ages while the Denmark Men’s Shed put on a free BBQ, contributing to the community atmosphere. Youth information stalls by Local Drug Action Group, Albany Youth Support Association (AYSA) and Youth Focus provided information, support and activities for the young crowd.
Both events were funded by the Shire of Denmark, Denmark Local Drug Action Group and the Department of Communities. The events were delivered by the Shire of Denmark in partnership with community organisations AYSA, Denmark CRC and Denmark Arts.
