About the Opportunity

This role supports the Shire’s statutory compliance functions through investigation, education, and enforcement activities, with a strong focus on achieving positive community outcomes. You will work with a high level of autonomy while balancing regulatory requirements with practical, solution‑focused approaches.

Reporting to the Manager Development Services, the Compliance Officer undertakes investigations relating primarily to planning, development, building, and related regulatory matters. The role involves responding to community enquiries and complaints, conducting site inspections, gathering evidence, preparing reports, and supporting enforcement actions where required.

You will work collaboratively within a small team and engage with the community in a respectful, professional manner that reflects the Shire’s values.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate alleged non‑compliance with legislation, local laws, approvals, and Council policies
  • Monitor and respond to unauthorised land use and development activities
  • Conduct site inspections, interviews, and evidence collection
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and compliance documentation
  • Provide clear advice and education to internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist the community to understand regulatory requirements and processes
  • Liaise with the Shire’s solicitors to support enforcement actions
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of compliance processes and systems

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have -

  • Experience and/or knowledge in town planning, environmental health, building, regulatory compliance, or a related discipline
  • Working knowledge of legislation relevant to local government compliance functions
  • Strong investigation, evidence gathering, and problem‑solving skills
  • Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict‑resolution skills
  • The ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic records management systems
  • Previous experience in a local government compliance or regulatory environment (desirable)
  • Knowledge of planning, development, or construction processes (desirable)
  • Experience using SynergySoft or similar local government systems (desirable)
  • Current C Class driver’s licence
  • Candidates must be willing to complete a pre-employment medical (including drug and alcohol screening) and provide a current National Police Clearance.

Hours - Part-time 38 hours per fortnight
Salary - 
$83,000.00 per annum pro-rata
