Community rallies to support Denmark’s most vulnerable

The Denmark community has rallied to support those experiencing hardship due to the coronavirus by participating in a food drive, ensuring households and families get the groceries and supplies they need.

In April the Shire recruited local sporting clubs to support the Denmark Community Resource Centre and Homeless Project Denmark collect food donations after a surge in demand.

Denmark Netball Association, Denmark Walpole Junior and Senior Football Clubs, Denmark Running Club, Denmark Gymnastics, Denmark Riverside Club and the Denmark Junior Soccer Club promoted the drive to their members and took to social media to encourage participation.

Shire Clubs Officer Julia Scriven said the drive has helped forge stronger relationships in the community.

“It’s been an opportunity for clubs to connect with their members and key community support organisations, while supporting the wellbeing of their community,” she said.

Individuals have also been contributing by dropping donations at the Supa IGA, CRC and Uniting Church, and local businesses have been providing significant contributions of cooked meals.

CRC co-manager Petra Thompson said the donations have been overwhelming.

“We are over the moon with the response. The recipients of the food are extremely grateful for the community’s generosity,” she said.

Throughout April the drive has provided enough supplies to meet current needs, with the Shire looking into grants to help secure a more sustainable supply of food into the future.

The food drive continues, and those wanting to donate can drop items in the donation cage at the Supa IGA during opening hours, Denmark Community Resource Centre, Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm, and the Uniting Church, Wednesdays 10am-12pm.
