About the Opportunity
This role aims to protect and enhance the health and wellbeing of the Denmark community by delivering and enforcing statutory food, public, and environmental health programs. Through evidence-based initiatives, the role ensures the Shire of Denmark meets its legislative responsibilities and provides a safe, healthy, and supportive urban and natural environment for residents and visitors alike.
Responsibilities of this role include:
- Conduct inspections and assessments of food premises, public facilities, and environmental health risks across the Shire of Denmark.
- Complete complex investigations of public and environmental health threats, including water quality, sanitation, and waste management issues.
- Provide accurate and specialist advice to Council, local businesses, and the community on health and safety matters.
- Issue lawful approvals, permits, and notices in accordance with relevant legislation and Shire policies.
- Process applications and maintain records for permits, registrations, and approvals under Council’s statutory responsibilities.
- Take enforcement action as required to ensure compliance with public health, environmental health, and local laws.
- Investigate notified infectious disease outbreaks, nuisance complaints, and environmental hazards impacting the Denmark community.
- Prepare documentation and assist with initiating legal proceedings for breaches within areas of responsibility.
- Work collaboratively with the Environmental Health team to engage with the community, promote awareness, and encourage compliance with relevant legislation and local laws.
About You
- Tertiary qualification in Health Science, Environmental Health, or a related field, or equivalent experience that qualifies you for appointment as an authorised officer in Australia.
- Demonstrated experience and expertise in public and environmental health, preferably within a local government context.
- Strong understanding and practical application of public and environmental health legislation, guidelines, and Australian Standards.
- Proven ability to conduct inspections, investigations, and enforcement in areas such as food safety, water quality, environmental protection, and nuisance management.
- Experience in developing, implementing, and reporting on public and environmental health programs that support community wellbeing.
- Eligible for membership of Environmental Health Professionals Australia Limited.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with the community, businesses, and colleagues.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to manage complex investigations and compliance matters.
- Current and valid driver’s licence.
- Ability to obtain or currently hold an Employee Working with Children Check.
- Candidates must be willing to complete a pre-employment medical (including drug and alcohol screening) and provide a current National Police Clearance.
