The Denmark Shire Council voted on Tuesday night to accept an alternate motion which allows the Kwoorabup Nature School to enter into a new and expanded lease for its school site which sits within the Denmark Heritage Railway Precinct.

The new lease accommodates the growth of the school which attracts families to the district, while allowing the opportunity for community groups and organisations to continue the shared use of buildings on the site.

The alternate motion also directs Shire officers to engage with the community about the future broader heritage precinct area in a review of the site concept plan, with results of the engagement process to be tabled for Council’s consideration.

Speaking after the meeting, Denmark Shire Deputy President Kingsley Gibson said Council took the view that allowing the school to remain and expand was an appropriate use of the site.

“At the same time, we’re very keen to see all the users on the site come together to work to improve and enhance the heritage assets in the heritage precinct,” Cr Gibson said.

“From what we heard during public question time last night, all user groups at the heritage precinct recognise and prioritise the heritage values there, so we hope to see all of the organisations involved come together in future as they work towards the same goals of appreciating and protecting the history of that site for the benefit of future generations.”

More information about public consultation regarding the future of the heritage precinct will be made available in the coming weeks.
