Compulsory domestic general waste collection applies within Denmark, Nornalup and Peaceful Bay townsite zones.

Compulsory domestic recycling applies within the townsite of Denmark.

Fees for new or additional/amended services will be issued on a pro-rata basis via an adjustment notice from the date of application or on completion of building.

Subsequently any request for a change of service by a tenant must be authorised by the owner of the property. This applies to residential and commercial premises

How can I make changes to my waste services?

All changes to waste services must be authorised by the owner of the property as associated fees will be charged via property rates.

To find out what services are applicable at the property please refer to Kerbside Collection.

Rubbish collection is restricted to the Denmark, Peaceful Bay and Nornalup townsites and to any property zoned Special Residential or higher density outside of these gazetted areas. Recycling collection is restricted to the Denmark townsite only.

If you live in a non-compulsory area that adjoins a rubbish collection run and 50% or more of the residents in your area indicate a wish to opt in to the rubbish collection service, it may become compulsory for all residents in that area to have the service.

Please click here for waste disposal information for Rural Properties Outside Collection Zones

I am physically unable to put my bin on the kerb; can I get some help?

The Shire will retrieve your bin from a suitable place on your property as per the Shire policy:

P100103 PROVISION OF RUBBISH SERVICE FOR THE DISABLED/INFIRMED

Objective

In recognition of the needs of the elderly and / or infirmed, Council provides a service to those residents utilising Council’s wheelie bin rubbish service but are, due to their age or condition, unable to wheel their bin from the front of their property to the kerb line and return.

Policy

Where the above circumstances exist, all requests for assistance with rubbish bin collection require a written request from the owner/applicant/resident and a letter from their Doctor confirming that they are unable to regularly move their bin to the required location for Council pick-up.

A similar service is also available for your recycling collection. The Shire will forward all requests to Cleanaway for assessment by that organisation.

To apply, please get your GP to write a letter of support and email it to enquiries@denmark.wa.gov.au

Why was my bin not collected?

Please ensure bins are placed at least 0.5 metres apart and at least 0.5 metres from the road verge to allow the rubbish truck arm to pick up the bin safely and securely. For more information please see What are the days of my waste service collection?

For rubbish bin collection enquiries please contact the Depot on 9848 0356.

For recycling bin collection enquiries please contact Albany Cleanaway team on 6801 7500.

How do I purchase a bin?

Domestic and commercial rubbish bins are not supplied by the Shire and will need be purchased from a hardware store of choice by the property owner or tenant. The bins, once purchased, are the property of the purchaser and must be to the following specifications:

  • Domestic – 120L green bin with red lid
  • Commercial – 240L green bin with red lid
  • Bin sticker corresponding to the service paid for must be displayed

Recycling bins may be purchased from a hardware store of choice or from Cleanaway. Bins from Cleanaway can be paid for at the Shire Administration Customer Service counter and will be delivered to the property. The bins, once purchased, are the property of the purchaser and must be to the following specifications:

  • Domestic and Commercial – 240L green bin with yellow lid

The owner of the bin is responsible for the maintenance or replacement costs if it is a matter of age, wear and tear, weathering or theft.

Why can’t I have a bigger rubbish bin at my residence?

In line with Shire of Denmark Sustainability Strategy, residents are encouraged to divert as much recyclable and reusable material from landfill as possible. A smaller rubbish bin promotes recycling and composting.

For more information on what and how to recycle in the Shire of Denmark please refer to the Recycling guide here.

To find out more about composting please refer to this composting guide

In the event that the 120L does not meet your household needs you may apply for an additional general waste service or call the Depoton 9848 0356 for more information.

My bin has been damaged. What can I do?

Kerbside bins fail primarily for two reasons – age and exposure to elements. As bins get older and spend large amounts of time in the weather, plastic becomes brittle and more prone to damage. This can lead to confusion regarding the cause of damage, perceived to be from the collection truck.

If it cannot be reasonably demonstrated that the truck operations caused bin damage, the owner of the property is expected to source the replacement or repair, including bin lids and wheels.

For information on purchasing new bins please see How do I purchase a bin?

In the event that it can demonstrated damage was caused by collection truck, the bin will need to be inspected. Please contact the relevant service provider to action your enquiry:

  • For rubbish bins, please call the Depot on 9848 0356
  • For recycling bins, please call Albany Cleanaway team on 6801 7500

What is the purpose of general waste bin stickers?

The Shire conducts audits of all kerbside general waste collection services. Bin stickers have replaced the historic coloured lid service indication system.

Only rubbish bins with valid identification stickers will be collected. The stickers correspond to the type of service that is charged on the property rates:

  • Green – domestic weekly
  • Blue – domestic Peaceful Bay Peak
  • Yellow – domestic fortnightly – the Shire is no longer accepting new applications for this service
  • White – commercial twice weekly
  • Dark yellow – commercial once weekly

For more information regarding these services please see What Waste Services are available in the Shire of Denmark?

If you do not have a sticker on your rubbish bin and you have a valid service, whether it is domestic or commercial, please contact the Depot on 9848 0356.

Please note that stickers are not required for recycling bins.

How do I safely dispose of my medical waste?

Hazardous medical waste, such as needles and syringes, should be disposed of responsibly via sharps containers. Sharps containers can be purchased at your local pharmacy and placed into your general waste bin. The Denmark Pharmacy also accepts sealed sharps containers.

Plastic medical waste, such as dialysis packs, needs to be placed in the general waste bin - these are NOT recyclable materials.
