Workshops to Capture Information on Tourism

Published on Thursday, 11 February 2021 at 11:35:14 AM

Workshops are being rolled out in Denmark and Nornalup in February and March so community members and businesses owners can have their say on the future of tourism in the Shire of Denmark.

It’s all part of the formal engagement process for the new Tourism Strategy which is being developed by the Shire of Denmark together with Great Southern Centre for Outdoor Recreation Excellence (GSCORE). Surveys and an online engagement platform have already begun to circulate within the Denmark community and relevant stakeholders, with workshops included in the engagement process to provide another option for consultation.

Divided into two formats, workshops in February will be offered to local business operators and will focus on visitor servicing in the Shire, including the future of the Denmark Visitor Centre. These will be followed by another round of workshops due to be held in March which will focus on broader issues associated with tourism development. In March, community members will also be invited to attend community workshops so issues, ideas and suggestions can be raised and worked through with the project team.

GSCORE Project Manager Dr Lenore Lyons said the first round of workshops to be held in February will focus on visitor servicing.
“Our aim is to develop a sound understanding of the business sector’s needs in relation to visitor servicing, including the range of ways that effective visitor services can be provided and how these should be funded,” Dr Lyons said.
“This will help to inform the Shire’s decision making with regards to the Denmark Visitor Centre.”

Shire of Denmark Acting CEO David Schober said capturing an in-depth understanding of community and business priorities around tourism in Denmark is at the heart of the new Tourism Development Strategy.
“We’re doing our best to reach out to everyone in the community for this engagement process,” Mr Schober said.
“Our hope is to gain enough feedback from community members, business operators and other stakeholders impacted by tourism to inform a comprehensive strategy which we can present to Council for the benefit of the entire community.”
