Seeking Input: Ocean to Channel Recreation Precinct

Denmark community members have been invited to comment on two concept designs to address current access and safety issues at the Prawn Rock Channel precinct near Ocean Beach, with particular regard to the road layout.

Using community feedback and ideas, the Shire of Denmark has developed two concept plans aimed at providing improved options for managing community and wildlife needs for the popular recreation area. The Shire of Denmark has invited further input from the community to guide decision making for the future of the Prawn Rock Channel precinct, opening a community voting poll.

The key consideration addressed by the two concept designs is road access which services local and tourist traffic along with heavy haulage which presents a safety issue in its current layout due to significant pedestrian access so close to the road.

A summary of community feedback on the popular area highlighted priorities including the installation of toilets and other amenities, improved access, parking and road safety, well-maintained recreation areas, all implemented with considerations for pedestrian, birdlife, dog-friendly and recreational fishing access. The aim of the two concept plans is to provide options which respond to those concerns and ideas. There are also Aboriginal Heritage sites, environmental and safety points which come into consideration for each option.

Shire of Denmark President Ceinwen Gearon recognised some community members may wish for the area to remain the way it is, but said there was sufficient need to look at developing new ideas for the area.

“The intensity of service pressure on the area with particular regard to accessibility for all members of the community, the current road safety concerns and lack of toilet facilities, means these issues need to be addressed for the future benefit of the community,” President Gearon said.

“But the need for change does not diminish the importance of community concerns which is why we are also inviting community comments and consultation via phone and email in addition to the voting poll.”

“It’s a great opportunity for our community members to have their say on the future of this very special place so we encourage everyone to engage with us and we look forward to receiving their ideas and feedback.”

Consultation is now open to all community members online and via community consultation booths at the Denmark Library and Denmark Recreation Centre. Detailed information on each concept plan along with background documents and annotated maps may be found online at Ocean to Channel Recreation Precinct.

Polling will close late-January 2021.
