Using the ideas and feedback provided by our community we have developed 2 concept plans for the Prawn Rock Channel precinct area.

We are seeking further input from you to guide us in the direction of the preferred option for this recreational area.

Options 1 and 2 below provide a response to address the current issues and meet community needs for this space. Both options provide improved amenities and well catered community recreational areas. However there are some environmental and safety points to consider for each option listed below.

Option 1

This option improves access and pedestrian safety by separating recreational users from traffic. It provides safe access to the beach, toilet facilities and designates grassed recreational space on the island. This option also provides new boardwalks, footpaths and water access.

Considerations: The island has been identified as having extremely high environmental value, this option has a greater environmental impact on the island. Option 1 has limited recreational space due to the current location of Ocean Beach Road. Refer to the Flora and Fauna survey summary for further details.

Option 2

This option improves safety and provides a larger recreational space by realigning Ocean Beach Road. This option allows for an alternative route which will remove traffic, including heavy haulage accessing the lime pit, away from the recreational space. This option also provides amenities, larger grassed areas and an improved family friendly atmosphere. Impact on the island is reduced and Aboriginal Heritage sites are protected in this option.

This option also provides new boardwalks, footpaths and water access.

Considerations: Realigning the road will have an environment impact on the area designated for the new road. A Flora and Fauna survey of the Ocean to Channel precinct area has been conducted and this area is reported to be of lesser environmental value than the island.

Why can't we have?

A permanent boat ramp - a boat ramp would require major infrastructure including a breakwater to protect it as it would be located in the active erosion zone. The development of a breakwater is outside the scope of this precinct project.

Why can't we leave it the way it is?

This popular area is under intense service pressure, major issues such as the ones identified as part of the feedback including the lack of toilet facilities, road safety issues, parking and general access need to be addressed to meet the community needs. This precinct is enjoyed by the whole community and addressing these issues will ensure reduced risks for users into the future.

What about the bird sanctuary?

We have received a proposal for a bird sanctuary within the Prawn Rock Channel precinct. Details about the proposal can be found on our 'Dog Friendly Spaces' community consultation page.
