The Shire of Denmark recently receive an impact report following November’s Garage Sale Trail event.
The report speaks to the enthusiasm of Denmark community members who embraced the event which highlights the importance of preventing waste from entering landfill by upcycling, repurposing and reselling.
More than 1781 local participants were involved as sellers or shoppers at 73 garage sales and stalls held locally over two weekends in the Shire of Denmark last year.
All up, the event saw 13,087 kilograms of reusable items saved from going to landfill locally which was an impressive effort.
Denmark Shire President Ceinwen Gearon said the ethos of the Garage Sale Trail is a perfect fit for the local community.
“Our community is full of passionate advocates for sustainability so it came as no surprise to me to hear that we not only had so many sales take part in this national landfill-diversion event, but also that so much was prevented from going into landfill on a local level,” Cr Gearon said.
“Community members who participated, either as buyers or sellers, should give themselves a pat on the back for preventing more than 13 tonnes of perfectly reusable items from ending up in landfill.”
Cr Gearon said participating in the organisation and promotion of the event was another tick for the Shire.
“We’re glad to have delivered on another commitment in our Sustainability Strategy – to support the community to promote a circular economy and buy local philosophy,” she said.
“We already can’t wait for November 2022 to roll around again so we can all enjoy another fun weekend out of Garage Sales!”
According to the report, more than 97 per cent of local participants said they were more likely to reduce waste after holding a garage sale and 64 per cent of residents indicated they were now more aware of what they buy.
