Ocean Beach Road Upgrades in 2022

Published on Wednesday, 22 December 2021 at 9:49:35 AM

In February 2022, work will commence on a major road reconstruction on Ocean Beach Rd between Zimmermann St and Blackburn St.

Major reconstruction work is required on this section of Ocean Beach Rd in order to rectify wear and tear on this heavily trafficked road.

The project is scheduled to commence in February to avoid the busiest period of the Christmas and New Year peak visitor season, while allowing a sufficient window of expected dry weather in order to reduce time delays and associated potential costs.

The works schedule has been designed in stages to allow for as little as possible disruption to traffic flow, particularly with regard to intersection disruptions and the proximity to residential properties. The Shire will be working with residents of impacted properties in efforts to minimise inconveniences.

During the project, this short section of Ocean Beach Rd will be reduced to one-lane traffic with traffic lights in place to manage the flow of vehicles. There will be some disruptions to intersections that are included in the reconstruction and detours will be in place.

Denmark residents and visitors who are able to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes while the reconstruction is underway are encouraged to do so. The project is expected to be completed by April 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this work need to be done during the summer holidays? The project has been planned to avoid coinciding with Christmas and New Year celebrations and the height of our peak visitor period. Unfortunately, delaying the commencement of the project further would increase the risk of weather delays and a lengthier period of inconvenience.

How long will this project take? The plan is - weather depending - to have the work done and dusted by early April.

What will traffic flow be like? This section of Ocean Beach Rd will be reduced to one-lane traffic with traffic control in place to manage the flow of vehicles. There will be some disruptions to intersections that are included in the reconstruction and detours will be in place.

What consideration has been given to access in the case of an emergency? The Shire has already contacted Emergency Services providers (Denmark Police, St John Ambulance, FESA, Ocean Beach Bushfire Brigade, Denmark Surf Lifesaving Club, SES and Marine Rescue) to provide detail about the roadworks on Ocean Beach Rd and to explain the nature of expected delays. We will maintain contact with Emergency Services providers throughout the works. In the case of emergencies, traffic will be managed to ensure safe access.

I live in the immediate area. Who do I contact if I have issues or concerns? Our Manager Civil Infrastructure Barry Moore will be out and about meeting with impacted residents prior to the project commencement. Barry is happy to answer any questions and receive and issues or concerns from residents at any time. Our Deputy CEO David King is also available. You can reach them both at enquiries@denmark.wa.gov.au or at (08) 9848 0300.
