Message from the Shire President - Tuesday 25 March

Published on Wednesday, 25 March 2020 at 2:39:00 PM

We have seen over the last few days additional restrictions to the way we work and live to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

We’ve also seen the first confirmed cases in the Great Southern, and while it’s important that we remain calm, it is imperative that we continue to protect ourselves and our community by following the advice from the Department of Health and the Australian Government.

This means taking social distancing seriously, washing hands regularly, leaving home only when it is essential to do so, and ensuring you sufficiently isolate yourself from the community if you are unwell, to keep others safe.

Our Pandemic Response Team have been meeting every day, working on redeploying a number of staff to dedicated roles to assist and support our community.

We now have a Business Continuity Officer to assist small businesses, and a Grants Officer to help you navigate the various grants and financial support available.

An Isolated Communities Communications Officer will be getting support information and advice out to the communities of Peaceful Bay and Nornalup regularly, as well as aged care facilities and retirement villages.

We are also attending weekly Local Emergency Management Committee meetings to support Health, Police and other key agencies.

Council have also endorsed a rate freeze in line with State and Federal Governments.

I urge the community to check the Department of Health website as the true source of information and updates, and be mindful about misinformation circulating on social media and the web.

I ask that you share accurate information as well as the information the Shire distributes, to your loved ones that may not have access to social media, the internet or a mobile phone.

These are uncertain times and we are being challenged in unprecedented ways, but we will get through it more resilient and more connected than ever before.

I call on you now to look after yourselves, check on each other regularly and support your community in whatever way you can with kindness and compassion.
