The Shire of Denmark adopted its 2020/2021 Annual Budget this month, directing its focus on economic and community recovery.

Council approved a 0% rate increase for 2020/2021, with the exception of properties that have undergone extensive improvement, and a $7m capital works program to boost local employment opportunities.

In addition to the 0% rate increase, the implementation of a Financial Hardship Policy developed in response to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic provides flexibility for any ratepayer, business or community group under financial stress.

Shire President Dr Ceinwen Gearon said that Shire staff are committed to helping the community in its recovery.

“We have witnessed first-hand the impact COVID-19 has had on our community and local businesses.

“While this latest Budget goes some way to easing the financial pressure on ratepayers, we understand the difficulties many people are facing and encourage you to reach out for support. With flexible options available for rates payments, we will help you wherever we can,” she said.

The local economy and employment will also receive a significant boost with the Shire successfully obtaining $5.4m of external government funding to undertake an extensive capital works program. This will provide opportunities for local businesses to help deliver a number of projects during the year.

Major projects over the next 12 months include the Lights Beach redevelopment ($734k), Rail Trail Bridge ($200k), community project infrastructure ($350k), road and bridge works ($4.1m), and bushfire mitigation activities ($500k).

The Shire will continue to provide considerable contributions, donations and subsidies to support the community. This includes around $500,000 towards local community groups and events, with the Shire recognising the vital role these provide to the community.

Dr Gearon praised Councillors and staff for their hard work, flexibility and cohesion during a difficult year.

“I wish to acknowledge the way Councillors and staff have worked together at such a challenging time to deliver this year’s Budget that supports our community,” she said.
