The Irwin Inlet will be opened on Wednesday 29th July, timed with the ebbing tide.

The inlet’s current water level is 0.85m, exceeding the absolute maximum water level of 0.77m as defined in the Irwin Inlet Sandbar Opening Protocol (2012).

Signs are in place warning drivers of the current conditions as water has now inundated the road.

Based on this week’s weather forecast, and in accordance with the protocol, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has authorised the Shire of Denmark to open the sandbar to alleviate flooding in the catchment.

The Shire of Denmark is working with local fishermen to determine the preferred opening site.

The Shire asks that the community take caution and be aware of the potential increase of sharks in the area following the opening.

The Irwin Inlet Sandbar Opening Protocol was adopted in 2012 by the Shire in consultation with the Peaceful Bay Progress Association, South Coast Fisherman Association, Department of Water and adjoining landowners.

The Shire of Denmark has commenced discussions with local groups and key stakeholders to conduct a review of the Irwin Inlet Sandbar Opening Protocol.
