Irwin Inlet set to open due to Heavy Weather Forecast

Published on Thursday, 27 May 2021 at 9:13:54 AM

UPDATE - The Irwin Inlet was opened on Thursday 3 June to coincide with the high tide. Water levels had reached 0.6m.

CONTEXT

The Shire has been undertaking reconstruction works on Peaceful Bay Road.

Construction delays and a wet April have resulted in the works unfinished and unprotected as of Wednesday 26 May 2021.

If the water levels rise to the agreed level of 0.6m or above, the road is likely to sustain significant damage.

With these considerations in mind, an opening in the immediate future is required.

DETAILS

As of Wednesday 26 May 2021, the current water level of the Irwin Inlet was 0.4m.

Preparations are underway to open the inlet if the water reaches 0.44m (as defined as the minimum acceptable water level in the Irwin Inlet Sandbar Opening Protocol).

Weather forecasts for the weekend anticipate falls of up to 100ml with the potential for flooding within the Shire, leading to expectations the water level of the inlet will rise significantly.

The Shire will not open the inlet without the proper approvals and advice from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.

The opening of the Irwin Inlet could occur as soon as this weekend (29/30 May 2021).
