The condition of gravel roads across the Shire of Denmark will be put under the microscope after Council last night voted to investigate options for improvements to the road network.
A notice of motion put forward by Councillor Jan Lewis and carried by Council requested the Shire conduct a preliminary cost-benefit analysis of sealing gravel roads in the Shire which have high traffic counts, are on school bus routes and other relevant strategic factors such as tourist routes, link roads and access/egress in bushfire events.
Shire officers were also requested to investigate ‘innovative and environmentally sustainable options’ for road surfacing to be considered alongside community satisfaction.
Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer David Schober said Council recognises road conditions are a priority for Denmark residents.
“The condition of our gravel roads is an important issue for many in our community,” Mr Schober said.
“This decision by Council reflects the on-going commitment to continue maintenance and upgrade works on the local road network, but also that we to continue to research funding avenues to facilitate key projects.”
The results of the analysis will be presented to Council ahead of 2022/2023 budget considerations.
