Patients needing transport from Denmark for critical medical care will benefit most with the Shire of Denmark receiving $26,435 for upgrades to the Denmark Airport as part of the Regional Airports Development Scheme.

The grant, funded by the Department of Transport, will be used to replace the current runway lights and wind direction indicator lights with LED lamps to improve visibility and safety at the airstrip.

The grant funding application was supported by the Royal Flying Doctor Service Western Operations in Jandakot, and the Denmark Airport Association which has spent many hours maintaining the aging airport lighting.

Denmark Airport Association Chair and Secretary Wayne Austin said the upgrade to LED lighting will reduce the carbon footprint of the lights and improve safety at the airport.

“The switch to LED lights will draw only 10-20% of power that the system currently uses, and will improve the reliability of the system for the vital Royal Flying Doctor Service and other night operations at Denmark, preventing ambulance transfers to Albany Regional Airport,” he said.

The Denmark Airport Association will maintain the new lighting system.

The aim of the RADS grants are to improve infrastructure and safety at regional airports. In the last 10 years, 283 regional airport projects have been granted more than $42 million in RADS funding, helping transform regional airports across WA.
