The Shire of Denmark is joining with other Local Governments in the Great Southern Alliance to facilitate a mass e-waste recycling drive at the Denmark Waste Management and Reuse Facility (DWMRF) from Sunday 14 November to Sunday 5 December.
It’s all part of a Western Australian Local Government Association sponsored collaboration event which aims to prevent e-waste from entering landfill and from contaminating recycling systems.
During the free event which spans three weeks, the DWMRF will be accepting unwanted e-waste items with a plug, battery or cord. During this time, the Shire’s Waste Services team hopes to see the community dropping off unwanted power tools, appliances, toys and so on, in addition to Shire’s standard e-waste collection of computers, televisions and their associated peripherals (i.e. mouses, keyboards, printers and so on).
Shire of Denmark Manager Waste and Reserves Bohdi Davies said this recycling drive is a great education opportunity for our community.
“Often people with the best of intentions place e-waste materials into their recycling bins, things like batteries, electrical appliances, computers, televisions and phones,” Mr Davies said.
“But we have limitations on what we can recycle through the kerbside and tip comingled recycling stream.”
“E-waste items create hazards and reduce recycling efficiency through the comingled recycling stream. Every bit of awareness we can raise around the proper disposal of electronic goods is great.”
“We know our community cares about doing the right thing when it comes to recycling and reducing our footprint on the environment so we hope to see a lot of activity during the three-week e-waste collection.”
Items can be dropped off at the DWMRF during opening hours (Monday to Saturday 12-4pm and Sunday 9am to 1pm).
There are also collections to be held in the City of Albany and Shires of Plantagenet and Jerramungup.
After the collection blitz, services will revert back to only include the items supported by the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme.
