Favourite community program wraps up as pandemic restrictions ease
After twelve consecutive weeks of offerings, the Shire of Denmark’s Connected Community program will wrap up this month as venues and facilities reopen under easing restrictions.
The popular program was created in response to COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings and services and allowed the community to remain socially connected and active during physical isolation and facility closures.
Over 200 individual sessions from yoga and karate to art and poetry were scheduled over the twelve weeks, delivered through video conferencing platform Zoom in partnership with community and local businesses.
Connected Community assisted many local businesses to expand their service model to include online services and provided an opportunity for them to reach new and wider audiences.
The program’s success also prompted Denmark Recreation Centre and Denmark Library to develop and deliver online programs and resources to customers and members.
Denmark Community Resource Centre delivered regular sessions throughout the program and plan to continue offering Zoom services into the future after receiving positive feedback from the community.
Shire of Denmark Executive Manager Community Services Angela Simpson said the program has resulted in residents gaining skills and knowledge in the use of new technologies.
“Connected Community prompted many previously offline residents to get online, allowing them to stay connected to friends and family and participate in the activities they love. Many have now become comfortable with the technology and can build on their new skill set.
“The program was key in maintaining our community’s social cohesion, reducing isolation and promoting wellbeing during what has been a challenging time for many. The feedback from the community has been outstanding,” she said.
The final session, ‘Bragging Rights Quiz with Denmark CRC’ will be held at 5pm, Friday 26 June via Zoom, meeting ID 321-844-2936.
The final program is available from the Shire of Denmark website.
