Fashionista CEOs suit up for a good cause

Shire of Denmark CEO David Schober and City of Albany CEO Andrew Sharpe got together for a fashion shoot last month to promote Garage Sale Trail, a weekend-long event encouraging re-use and community connectedness.

The unique jackets have been making their way around the country to local councils to help promote the event and highlight the volume of textiles that go into landfill each year.

‘Fast Fashion’ – cheap clothing produced quickly in response to the latest trends – is driving the purchase of clothing that is often discarded after just two or three wears.

Australians buy on average 27kgs of new textiles each year and discard 23kgs to landfill.

The jackets are made from repurposed fabric and clothing bought at op shops by sustainable fashion designers Jeff McCann from Sydney and Kate Hannah of PJUNK in Perth.

Mr Schober said Garage Sale Trail was a great way to recycle or upcycle unwanted clothes and other items.

“With such huge volumes of textiles going to landfill every year, the Trail is a perfect opportunity to participate in a circular economy and sell the excess in your wardrobe to be worn and loved again,” he said.

Mr Sharpe said some great bargains could be found at garage sales.

“No one loves a garage sale more than the Great Southern community, and this initiative brings the City of Albany and Shire of Denmark together in the name of sustainability,” he said.

In Denmark there are currently 83 stalls registered.  Garage Sale Trail is next weekend on 19th and 20th October.

Anyone in the community can get involved hosting a sale or shopping the Trail at garagesaletrail.com.au/councils/Shire-of-Denmark. Registrations are still open and it’s free to host a sale.
