Denmark community members got their hands dirty at the Shire of Denmark’s Revegetation Nursery on Saturday during a free plant propagation workshop.
The workshop, which was organised as part of the Shire’s Sustainability Environmental Education Program, was hailed as a resounding success with a total of 23 community members including Shire staff learning the tricks to propagating native plants under the experienced guidance of Shire of Denmark Revegetation Officer Mark Parre.
Mark shared his knowledge of seed propagation techniques and growing plants from cuttings of local native plant species before putting participants to work propagating native seed and planting cuttings into nursery trays.
“The workshop was well-attended and very successful,” Mark said.
“We were able to get hands on participation and we talked a lot about adapting techniques and methods for propagating at home and where you can and can’t collect plant material from. We also gave the group a tour of the Shire’s nursery so they could see how the Shire operates its revegetation program.”
The plants which were propagated during the workshop will be planted out at revegetation sites at Lights Beach, Ocean Beach Lime Quarry and Miller’s Creek.
Shire of Denmark Sustainability Officer Yvette Caruso said it was nice to share an insight into the Shire’s revegetation work, with a lot of positive feedback rolling in from community members who attended.
“Participants said it was a very informative workshop with a great mix of theory and hands-on interactive experience in plant propagation,” Yvette said.
“Everyone said how much they enjoyed learning from Mark who was willing to share his vast expertise and local knowledge. I also think all participants were really pleased to know the propagation work they had done during the workshop would go into revegetation sites around our Shire.”
“From my perspective as the Shire’s Sustainability Officer, it’s nice to see strong community interest and participation in education programs like this as we work towards achieving the goals and aspirations of our new Sustainability Strategy which was endorsed by Council in March this year.”
Due to popular demand the Shire hopes to hold another plant propagation workshop in spring for those community members who expressed an interest but missed out on a place in the first workshop.
