In mid-November, work will commence on the Lights Road Upgrade, with the project expected to take four months to complete.
The project scope includes the complete sealing of the current gravel section of Lights Road, pavement construction, drainage upgrades, intersection modifications and line-marking. The project is in the best interests of the community and ratepayers as the improvements will increase safety on Lights Road, while reducing the on-going maintenance costs of this increasingly popular traffic route.
The project will cause traffic disruptions with road users required to detour via Ocean Beach Road during business hours throughout the duration of the project. Residents of the impacted section of Lights Road have been liaised with directly.

Stage Two: 9 January 2023 onwards
• After the contractor’s Christmas closure, works will recommence. Expected completion: March 2023
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this mean we’ll lose or damage the beautiful avenue of trees? The road will retain the iconic feel and aesthetics because we will only undertake minimal widening where necessary. Our team has worked really hard to protect the existing mature trees on Lights Road. The sealing of the road will actually prevent further damage to existing trees because the grader will no longer be scraping against tree roots.
Why does this work need to be done over the summer holidays? The project has been planned to avoid coinciding with Christmas and New Year celebrations and the height of our peak visitor period. Unfortunately, delaying the commencement of the project further would increase the risk of weather delays and a lengthier period of inconvenience.
How long will this project take? The plan is - weather depending - to have the work done and dusted by March.
What will traffic flow be like? There will be disruptions and road closures during the construction process. Local traffic will be able to make arrangements directly with the contractor for property access. All other traffic will be required to make use of Ocean Beach Road.
What consideration has been given to access in the case of an emergency? In the case of emergencies, traffic will be managed to ensure safe access.
I live in the immediate area. Who do I contact if I have issues or concerns? Local residents should have already been contacted by our Technical Services team. If you need to get in contact, you can reach us at enquiries@denmark.wa.gov.au or at (08) 9848 0300.
