Community conversation - The future of visitor servicing

The Shire of Denmark hosted a community conversation on August 12 to discuss the future of visitor servicing in Denmark.

The Shire covered topics such as the Shire’s role in tourism, the decision-making around Amazing South Coast’s decision to divest itself of the Visitor Centre, the future of the building, and the role of the Shire in supporting tourism going forward.

Over 60 people attended the community consultation which involved a Q&A panel with Shire of Denmark Acting Chief Executive Officer David Schober, Amazing South Coast Tourism Inc representatives, Peter Grigg and Susan McCabe, along with Denmark Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Sumer Addy.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to listen to the community. We are also able to help the community understand what we can do to support tourism and what they can do”, said Mr Schober.

The community shared ideas around visitor servicing in Denmark and were encouraged to submit their proposals to the Shire for Council to consider.

“The Shire remains committed to working with industry and community and we encourage a new model which is dynamic and robust to meet current economic and visitor servicing need’, he said.

The Shire currently contributes over $95,000 per year towards tourism. The Shire will be led by both industry and the community in all aspects of decision making.

“A new model needs to be sustainable and live beyond the now”, Mr Schober said.
