Students from the Denmark Primary School, High School and the College of Agriculture were treated to an entertaining talk by author James Foley as part of Children’s Book Week celebrations.
Foley, author and illustrator of several books for children and young adults, shared with captivated students how they can achieve their goals with passion and persistence, and how failing along the way is part of the learning journey.
Foley spoke of the artwork process with fun and humour, intriguing his young audience and leaving them eager to know more about the business of book illustration.
Senior Librarian Robyn Fairclough stated that Children’s Book Week “is an opportunity to connect with the schools and students, and to showcase the creators behind the fabulous books we read and love. James was a lively and inspiring presenter who I am sure the students will always remember. It was a pleasure to work with some of the older students this year too.”
Children’s Book Week is normally held in August each year, but in 2020 is officially in October. Some schools chose to celebrate in August, dressing up as favourite literary characters.
Denmark Library staff also visited the Kindergartens to deliver a Better Beginnings literacy gift pack to the students. Better Beginnings is a state-wide program which aims to support and involve parents in their children's early literacy learning by providing free books and reading packs to every four and five year old in WA.
Children’s Book Week is supported by the Shire of Denmark, Albany Public Library, Children’s Book Council WA, Go2&5 and Healthway.
