Last night, Denmark Senior High School student Jessica Hilder was announced as the recipient of the annual Shire of Denmark Youth Leadership Award at the school’s Year 12 graduation ceremony.

Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer David Schober presented Jessica with the $1000 award on behalf of Council.

Mr Schober said the very best wishes of Council accompanied the award which will assist Jessica with her relocation costs to participate in the McCuster Citizen Internship program in Perth next year.

Council selected Jessica’s application as the successful candidate behind closed doors at the recent October Ordinary Council Meeting.

Jessica’s leadership achievements impressed Council, including her management of her School Captain responsibilities to participate in meetings with boards and the school principal as a representative of the student body, running fundraisers and working to make the school a better environment for all.

Jessica also assisted with the school’s first-ever yearbook and mentored Year 11 student council members to make the process of creating annual editions of the yearbook easier in future.

Jessica volunteered at the Rainbow Coast Neighbourhood Centre, a not-for-profit organisation that supports mothers, migrants and low-income families, assisting them with numerous events such as Harmony Day, Community Garden activities and more.

“It’s easy to see why Jessica’s leadership qualities stood out to Council,” Mr Schober said.

“On behalf of Council and the whole team at the Shire of Denmark, I wish Jessica all the best with her internship and we look forward to having her back in a year’s time to tell us all about the experience.”
