Better Beginnings is a state wide family literacy program promoting reading and the love of books from an early age. It has been developed by the State Library of Western Australia, and aims to support parents as their children's first teacher.

It's never too early to start reading to your baby or child. Sharing a love of reading, rhyming, singing and talking with your child is one of the best things you can do to give them a head start in life.

Better Beginnings for Babies

Better Beginnings for babies is available for parents with new born babies who will receive their Better Beginnings reading kit from Community Child Health Nurse. The kit includes a board book, information about reading to your baby and our Library activities such as Rhymetime.

 Sing With Me

The Sing With Me reading packs are designed for children aged two years old, and contain an Australian Children's picture book and a CD of nursery rhymes. The pack encourages parents and carers to read and sing with their children every day.

Now we are 4 and 5

Local schools and Community Kindergartens are invited to participate with the Library to receive free reading packs for every Kindergarten aged child. Librarians will visit your child’s school to deliver the packs and provide a story time. Each reading pack contains a free picture book and can be taken home to enjoy with the family.

For Home-schooled families please contact the Library or pop in to receive a pack for your 4 year old.
