Biodiversity Management
The Shire of Denmark is important as part of a region of high biodiversity. It consists of a wide variety of vegetation types and is particularly renowned for its magnificent stands of tall Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) trees. Denmark is home to a number of Commonwealth-listed threatened species, including the Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhyncus latostris) and Chuditch (Dasyurus geoffroii), as well as approximately 240 species of birds. It features a number of major river systems and associated inlets, including the Wilson, Parry and Irwin. Denmark also contains important wetlands and spectacular coastlines.
The Shire recognises that our natural environment is highly valued and is committed to careful management to meet the needs of our community now and in the future. The Shire's objectives, in consultation with community, in relation to the management of the natural environment is:
- To preserve and protect the natural environment
- To promote and encourage responsible development
- To reduce human impact on natural resources, reduce waste, and utilise renewable energy
- To acknowledge and adapt to climate change
Funding Opportunities
Grants for Conservation of Natural Heritage
Lotterywest provide grants to conserve natural habitats and maintain the diversity of animal and plant species. Examples of project activities include: planting local species of trees and vegetation; linking areas of vegetation with bush corridors; fencing remnant vegetation and wetlands; and, controlling weeds, animals, disease and fire. Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA)
A State government department which protects and conserves the State's natural environment on behalf of the people of Western Australia. Contains visitor information for the DBCA-managed nature reserves and national parks, as well as the Munda Biddi and Bibbulmun tracks.
